Telecom

The Telecom industry has seen tremendous change and upheavals in the past decade. The combined forces of deregulation, technology shifts, evolving customer needs and preferences, and convergence of services have primarily driven these changes.

The shift from Wireline to Wireless, evolution from circuit switched networks to packet networks, movement from narrow band to broadband, and impending dominance of data over voice is having a profound impact on the structure and contours in this industry. Success in this industry increasingly depends on how players leverage the above trends to their advantage.

We are witnessing the emergence of Wireless as the most important part of telcos business portfolio. While being a high growth segment, Wireless services constitute a very challenging market, characterized by huge capital investments, rapidly evolving technology, declining ARPUs, unrelenting pressure to launch innovative and compelling applications and services, and managing customer churn. Emergence of pure plays in the VoIP space, pose a challenge to both wireline and wireless operators. Controlling total cost of operations and leveraging existing investments in infrastructure to launch new services are emerging as key success factors for telcos.

We are also witnessing the blurring of boundaries between the Telecom and Media & Entertainment industries, with content emerging as king and telcos having to rethink their strategies to remain an important player in the value chain.

Telecom equipment vendors have seen challenging times in recent years in an environment characterized by weak demand, rapid technology shifts and consolidation. The industry finds itself in a phase of capacity absorption after a hectic build up during the Internet boom years leading to weak demand for new equipment. This challenging environment has compelled many equipment vendors to take a hard look at their focus areas and the way they do business in an effort to remain competitive.
