About the Client

RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. is a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Railways and one of India’s leading telecom infrastructure and ICT service providers. RailTel operates a nationwide telecom network and provides connectivity, managed network services, and other ICT solutions to government organisations, enterprises, and institutions.

For this project, RailTel’s Central IP-MPLS network spans its operations, supporting reliable and centrally managed connectivity across a large and geographically distributed network infrastructure.

Why RailTel Needed a Smarter NMS?

As RailTel’s network expanded across multiple locations, its operations teams needed a centralized monitoring platform capable of providing deeper visibility across critical network layers:

IP-MPLS Visibility & Fault Assurance

Required centralized, end-to-end monitoring of IP-MPLS links, connectivity, and performance across a distributed network of 600+ IP-MPLS routers, ensuring reliable connectivity for critical public safety operations.

Detailed Traffic Visibility

Required deeper insights into traffic patterns, bandwidth utilization, and link performance to identify congestion and potential bottlenecks.

Centralized Network View

With monitoring spread across a large, distributed infrastructure, teams needed a unified view of device, link, optics, and traffic health to move from reactive troubleshooting to proactive network operations.

How Percipient NMS Solved It?

Echelon Edge deployed Percipient NMS to bring intelligence, automation, and control to RailTel’s multi-vendor environment spanning multi-vendor routers and switches.

  • Fault & Performance Management: Continuous monitoring of device and link health, availability, latency, packet loss, and performance enabled early detection of network issues.
  • IP-MPLS Monitoring: Centralized visibility into IP-MPLS links and connectivity helped teams monitor network performance and identify potential service-impacting issues proactively.
  • Optics Monitoring: Detailed monitoring of optical interfaces and fiber-related parameters provided deeper insights into link health and helped identify degradation before it led to failures.
  • Traffic Monitoring & Analysis: Granular traffic visibility enabled teams to track bandwidth utilization, analyse traffic patterns, and identify congestion or potential bottlenecks.
  • Network Configuration Management: Centralized configuration tracking, change detection, and baseline comparison helped maintain network consistency, reduce manual effort, and quickly flag unauthorized or erroneous changes.
  • Network Backup & Recovery: Automated configuration backups with version history provided a reliable recovery mechanism and simplified rollback when required.
  • Topology & Unified Dashboard: Auto-discovered topology maps and a centralized dashboard brought devices, links, performance, and alerts together, giving NOC teams a single, real-time view of the network.

Results Delivered by Percipient NMS

Percipient NMS gave RailTel’s operations teams the tools to stay ahead of the network rather than react to it:

01
Improved Network Operations: Reduced MTTR through proactive fault detection using optical trends, maintained audit-ready configuration history, and improved fault isolation efficiency by 40% through a unified operational view for the regional NOC.
02
Single Pane of Glass: A unified and consolidated view across 600 devices, replacing fragmented and region-specific monitoring practices.
03
Proactive Alert Detection: Transitioned from reactive incident response to proactive network management through continuous alerting and anomaly detection.
04
Faster Incident Resolution: Accelerated troubleshooting with monitoring, topology, and device data unified within a single platform.
05
Operational Automation: Reduced manual effort through automated configuration management and backup workflows.
05
Scalable Infrastructure Management: Built on Percipient Unified’s microservices architecture, the platform scales independently as device volumes grow. Its modular design enables RailTel to expand monitoring and add capabilities like service provisioning and ITSM without re-platforming.
